Flags That Look Almost Identical (and How to Tell Them Apart)
Some flags are separated by nothing more than a slightly different shade of blue or a 2:3 versus 1:2 ratio. These are the pairs that wreck quiz scores. Here are the worst offenders and the single tell for each.
Chad 🇹🇩 vs Romania 🇷🇴
Blue-yellow-red vertical tricolours. The only reliable difference is the shade of blue — Chad's is a darker, navy-leaning indigo; Romania's is a brighter cobalt. Officially they are almost the same; even diplomats have grumbled about it.
Indonesia 🇮🇩 vs Monaco 🇲🇨
Both are simply red over white. The difference is the ratio: Indonesia is 2:3 (longer), Monaco is 4:5 (closer to square). Poland 🇵🇱 is the same two colours flipped — white over red.
Ireland 🇮🇪 vs Côte d'Ivoire 🇨🇮
Green-white-orange both — but mirrored. Ireland leads with green on the hoist; Côte d'Ivoire leads with orange. Mnemonic: "Ireland is green first, like its hills."
Netherlands 🇳🇱 vs Luxembourg 🇱🇺
Red-white-blue horizontal bands. Luxembourg's blue is lighter (sky blue) and its flag is slightly longer. Side by side it's obvious; from memory it's brutal.
Drill these head-to-head in flag mode or push yourself with the hard flag quiz.
